Materials List:
UV Plus, one gallon for every 100-150 (rough) or 150-200 (smooth) square feet of wood surface
Messmer’s Wood & Deck Cleaner (Part A) (omit if the deck is already cleaned)

Bristle brush or roller and roller pans, 3/8″ nap roller cover
Do not begin until you have read and understand all instructions. Do not apply if rain is expected within 48 hours. In certain climates you may have to wait for a different time of year to do this. We recommend doing a small test area on your project to insure your satisfaction with color choice and appearance before proceeding with the entire job. Clean the deck, and brighten if necessary: Sweep excess debris (dirt and leaves) off the deck. Clean the deck with Messmer’s Wood & Deck Cleaner (Part A), or another high quality wood cleaner of your choice, then rinse thoroughly with clean water. For redwood and some cedars, use Messmer’s Wood and Deck Brightener (Part B) to remove tannin stains, which are dark discolorations from natural extractives in the wood. Rinse thoroughly after brightening with the Wood & Deck Brightener. Make sure the deck surface is clean, dry and in good condition. You may need to wait a few days for the wood to completely dry depending on weather conditions. Cover plants, grass, concrete, trim, and any other areas you don’t want stained. Apply Messmer’s UV plus deck stain: Stir Messmer’s UV plus thoroughly. Make sure that all pigment is mixed evenly into the stain. Apply one coat of UV Plus following label directions. Work with the grain. Brush or roll out any excess product puddled or pooled on the surface of the deck within 30 minutes. If excess product is not removed, sticky, shiny spots may remain on the surface. Clean-up: Following label directions, dispose of waste including roller covers and brushes in a water filled container. Seal the container and dispose of it properly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long will the product last?
A: Typically UV Plus needs to be reapplied every one to three years. The length of time will vary depending on the wood used, the way the deck is constructed, which direction it faces, and your local climate and sun intensity.
Q: How can I avoid shiny, sticky areas after application?
A: Be sure to wipe up any excess product about 30 minutes after application. UV Plus is a high solids product, and if overapplied it will not just evaporate away. It is designed to be a penetrating finish and does not dry properly if over applied to the surface.
Q: Why is it important to clean before applying UV Plus to a deck?
A: If you apply UV Plus to a dirty surface, the wood will turn dark and dingy. The oils and resins in the UV Plus will entrap the dirt and make it impossible to clean. By cleaning the wood with a good quality wood cleaner like Messmer’s Wood and Deck Part A, or Wood and Deck Liquid, you are properly preparing the deck for staining with UV Plus. Maintenance All exterior surfaces collect dirt, dust and contaminants. It is necessary to clean them periodically to keep them looking good. We suggest using Messmer’s Wood and Deck Part A Wood Cleaner at least twice a year for periodic maintenance cleaning. For information on cleaning a deck, click here: Clean and Maintain a Wood Deck.
Q: What is Messmer’s UV PLUS?
A: UV Plus is a penetrating wood stain and oil finish that beautifies and protects exterior wood, providing a natural appearance. It is ideal for use on cedar, pine and redwood and comes in a variety of tones and semi-transparent colors. UV Plus contains fungicides and UV absorbers of the highest quality. It does not form a surface film when properly applied and is not subject to peeling and flaking. To recoat, just clean and/or brighten the wood surface and reapply UV Plus. No stripping or sanding is necessary.
Q: How long will Messmer’s plus UV last?
A: On vertical, smooth surfaces, Messmer’s UV Plus can be expected to last for 2-3 years, on rough surfaces, 3-4 years and on decks 1-2 years. The time element will vary depending on conditions such as sunlight, weather and direction of exposure.
Q: I want to keep my wood looking natural? Should I use a clear finish?
A: Clears with no pigmentation do not offer UV protection or color retention. Our products contain Transparent Iron Oxide pigments which absorb UV radiation while allowing visible light to pass through. This results in a finish that highlights the natural beauty of the wood while still protecting it. We suggest using our transparent finish that is designed for the type of wood, such as Natural Redwood for redwood, Natural Cedar for cedar, and Pine/Fir for pine or douglas fir. This allows you to maintain a natural look and provide extended color retention and protection to the wood.
Q: After I applied Messmer’s UV Plus, there are areas that are shiny and tacky. What happened? How do I fix it?
A: This is usually caused by over saturation of UV Plus on the wood. Remember, Messmer’s UV Plus must be able to penetrate completely to work properly. Remove any excess material promptly. Within 48 hours of application, scrub affected areas with lacquer thinner or MEK solvent to soften excess material. Wipe dry. If product has cured to the point that this does not correct the problem, excess material must be removed by chemical stripping or sanding. Dispose of clean up materials according to local, state and federal regulations. Another cause of shiny tacky areas is applying the product to wood that is too damp. An oil based product applied to a wet deck will not penetrate very well, as the oil and water don’t mix. Make sure that the deck is thoroughly dry before applying any oil based product. Lumber that may appear to be dry or dry at the surface can still have a high moisture content that may “push” the oil back out if the boards are heated up by the sun later in the day.
Q: Can Messmer’s UV Plus be applied over another stain?
A: Yes, provided the previous finish has sufficiently weathered to allow penetration of UV Plus. For best results, clean the surface with WD Wood & Deck Renewer, Wood & Deck Cleaner and Brightener, or sand to a new surface.
Q: What is the proper temperature to apply Messmer’s UV Plus?
A: We recommend surface and air temperatures between 45F and 90F. Avoid application in direct sunlight on hot days. If the wood is hot to the touch, it is too hot to apply UV Plus.
Q: How long should I let my deck weather before applying Messmer’s UV Plus?
A: Redwood decks should weather six to eight weeks minimum before applying UV Plus. The wood needs to weather sufficiently to allow the pores to open up to accept the stain. Failure to do so will cause premature failure and possible surface sheen problems.
Q: Why doesn’t Messmer’s UV Plus bead water?
A: Water beading is accomplished by adding waxes or paraffin to the stain. These additives do not last very long and are not good permanent water repellents, in addition to this they interfere with adhesion should you decide to paint over the stain. That’s why we don’t use them in our products. The high solids content of UV Plus fills the pores of the wood, providing excellent water repellency that will last.
